Classic Shirt Construction with the Beth Galvin

Saturday, October 28, 10:00AM - 3:00PM

Ace Makerspace, Oakland

Learn to make a classic shirt!

In this class, garment maker extrodinaire, Beth Galvin, will teach you all the techniques you need to be able to make an amazing shirt. Beth will walk you through the skills needed to make a button shirt, sharing her expertise and answering all of your questions. One of the great things about this class is that Beth will also share her series of videos that demonstrate these techniques so you can review them from home following the class.

Beth will discuss:

  • setting a sleeve
  • collar
  • collar stand
  • button placket
  • cuffs
  • interfacing
  • French seams

Rather than focus on only one pattern, Beth will share the tips and tricks needed to make just about any classic shirt pattern. There are lots of great patterns out there for both women and men, you choose your favorite. Because this class focuses on techniques rather than being a sew-along following a specific pattern, you will learn the skills regardless of what pattern you select!

Remember you are learning the techniques to make a shirt - so think of this as a practice version where you make components rather than sewing a shirt start to finish. We suggest you cut out the pattern and shirt pieces (leave the pattern pieces pinned to the shirt you have cut out). This is a great time to make a practice shirt - so feel free to use muslin, scraps, or a combo of remnants from your stash. Beth with demonstrate sewing the components of a shirt and you can practice along in class and get feedback and helpful tips.

Keep in mind there's a lot of sewing involved in sewing a button shirt. You will leave class with the skills you need to make a shirt - you will have an opportunity to sew many of the components of the shirt in class where you can ask questions while you gain expertise. AND, you will have Beth's videos available to refresh your memory when you want to tackle that part of the project.

Skill level: ✂✂
