IN PERSON: All-Inclusive, Make a Relaxed Shirt with Kristen Takakuwa

Jump into sewing by learning how to make a comfortable and stylish shirt! 

We're doing something special for this class! Pre-cut fabric, and everything else you need, to make a relaxed shirt with Kristen Takakuwa are included as part of the class. This means that you get to focus on your sewing  and will have more time to finish your shirt. This is a great learn to sew class!!

We will be making the shirt length version of Tunic No. 1 by 100 Acts of Sewing. It is the perfect pattern for learning how to sew a drop shoulder shirt with a bias tape facing for the neckline. Made in a linen blend fabric, it has an easy-breezy casual look and works beautifully as a layering piece. Kristen will have you sewing with confidence by the end of class. You'll receive a copy of the pattern so you can make more in every color or length.

In this class you will learn how to:

• Use a sewing machine
• Read & understand sewing pattern and instructions
• Attach a sleeve
• Sew bias tape to create a facing
• Make a smooth even hemline

This class is open to every skill level.

Supplies: We will be making the shirt length version of 100 Acts of Sewing: Tunic No. 1. We are providing everything you need to make your shirt including a copy of the pattern so you can make more. You will receive pre-cut, linen blend, fabric in a solid color and bias tape in a matching color that is sized for the chest measurement you give us when you sign up. This is a very relaxed fit shirt so sizing isn't exact. 

This video walks you through how to measure your chest (you don't need to measure your waist or hips). Don't have a measuring tape? Just use a piece of string and then measure the string.

Sewing Machines: If you would like to use one of the sewing machines at Ace Makerspace (we highly recommend this for beginng sewists) please select the Use Ace Machine ticket. If you are comfortable and would like to use your own sewing machine please select the Use My Machine ticket. DO NOT purchase a Use My Machine ticket if you don't have a machine, it isn't working properly or you aren't comfortable operating it. In deciding whether to bring your own sewing machine, keep in mind that the textile studio is located on the 2nd floor. We don't have extra machines you can use. If we have sold out of Use My Machine tickets, and you want to use your own machine, you may purchase a Use Ace Machine ticket. 

About the instructor: 

Kristen Takakuwa is one of the original founders of Hello Stitch and learned to sew at the age of 8. Sewing has been a lifelong habit ever since! She has been teaching sewing to adults and kids for over 10 years and loves nothing more than sharing her skills and enthusiasm for sewing with others.

This class is being held at the Ace Makerspace located at 6050 Lowell St, #206, Oakland CA 94608. Located where Oakland, Berkeley and Emeryville come together and just a short hop from Ashby BART. Ace Makerspace is a nonprofit whose mission is bringing people together to create, learn and solve life’s challenges with an amazing array of tools, technology, and project-based education. Ace Makerspace is holding a Textiles Open Studio immediately following this class. You have a chance to use their beautiful space, sewing machines and equipment to continue working on your garment. The Textiles Open Studio is hosted by Team Ace who can assist you with the equipment and answer your basic sewing questions. Cancellation Policy:

Class fees are non-refundable. However you may transfer the class to a friend if you let us know in advance (please ask them to set up a guest account at Ace Makerspace). Please be aware that we may not be able to change the size of pre-cut fabrics if you transfer within a week of class.
